Using Tally from home or outside the office
There are four common ways to use Tally away from the office: remote-control an office PC with an app such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer, run your own Remote Desktop or VPN into an office server, use Tally Solutions' own remote and cloud options, or move Tally to a managed cloud host such as Airmax Tally Cloud. They differ mainly in who keeps the machine running, how many people can work at once, and what happens when the office PC, power or internet goes down.
1. Remote-control an office PC
A remote-control app lets you see and drive the office computer that has Tally on it. It is quick to set up and costs little, which makes it a common starting point.
- The office PC must stay switched on, with its own power and internet working, for as long as anyone needs Tally.
- It is one screen: while you control it, whoever is sitting at that PC cannot use it, and two remote people cannot work side by side.
- The data still lives on that one PC, so its disk, its backups and its security remain your responsibility.
2. Your own Remote Desktop or VPN to an office server
A server in the office running Windows Remote Desktop, reached over a VPN, lets several people work at once and is the traditional multi-user setup. It works well when someone competent owns it.
- You buy, power and eventually replace the server, and you configure the firewall, the VPN and the user accounts.
- Patching and backups are yours; so is noticing when a backup quietly stopped working.
- Exposing Remote Desktop to the internet without proper protection is a common way small business systems are attacked.
- If the office loses power or internet, every remote user loses access with it.
3. Tally Solutions' own options
Tally Solutions offers its own remote-access and cloud-related features for TallyPrime. What they include and how they are priced is set by Tally Solutions, so check Tally Solutions' website for current details. Airmax is an independent hosting provider and is not Tally Solutions.
4. Managed Tally hosting
With managed hosting, your licensed TallyPrime runs on a server in a data centre instead of your office, and everyone connects to it over an OTP-protected Remote Desktop session. Airmax runs the server, the security, the backups and the support.
- Nothing in the office has to stay on. Home, branch and office users all connect to the data centre.
- Several people work on the same company at once, from Windows, a Mac or a phone.
- Daily automated backups, plus your own copy to storage you control.
- The trade-offs: you need a working internet connection, there is a plan fee, and you control Tally and your data rather than the underlying server.
