Moving your existing Tally data to the cloud

Moving to Airmax Tally Cloud does not mean re-entering anything. You take a backup of your current Tally company data, Airmax restores it — together with your TallyPrime installation and any TDL customisations — onto your cloud server, you check the figures, and your team switches to the Remote Desktop shortcut. Migration is included free in every plan, and your existing installation is left untouched as a fallback.

Before you start: a short checklist

  • Your Tally licence details. The licence stays yours and is used on the cloud server.
  • Which Tally version you run today, and whether you want to stay on it.
  • The list of companies to move — including old years you still open occasionally.
  • Any TDL files or add-ons your Tally loads, so they can be installed on the server too.
  • Who needs access, and from where: office, branches, home, your accountant.
  • Printers, barcode scanners or other devices that each location uses with Tally.
  • The internet connection at each location. Steady matters more than fast.

The migration, step by step

  1. 1

    Take a backup in Tally

Use Tally's own backup function for the companies you are moving. Nothing is deleted from your current machine at any point.

  2. 2

    Hand the backup to Airmax

Share it with the Airmax team in the way agreed during setup. If the file is large, tell us and we will arrange a suitable way to transfer it.

  3. 3

We restore it on your cloud server

Your TallyPrime installation, your company data and your TDL customisations are put in place on the server, at no extra cost.

  4. 4

    You check the figures

Open the cloud copy and compare it with your current installation before anyone starts working on it (see the checks below).

  5. 5

Cut over at a quiet moment

Pick a time when nobody is entering vouchers — the end of a working day works well — so no entries go into the old copy after the final backup.

  6. 6

Your team switches to the Remote Desktop shortcut

From then on everyone opens Tally through the shortcut instead of the local icon. Keep the old installation as a read-only fallback for as long as you like.

What to check before you switch

A few minutes of comparison between the old and the cloud copy catches almost any problem:

  • The trial balance as on today's date.
  • The stock summary, if you maintain inventory in Tally.
  • Outstanding receivables and payables for a handful of parties you know well.
  • The GST reports for the most recent return period.
  • The number of vouchers in the day book for the last month.
  • That your TDL-based reports, invoice formats and custom fields appear as they should.

The one real risk: entries made after the backup

The mistake that causes trouble in a migration is not technical. It is someone entering vouchers into the old installation after the final backup was taken, so those entries never reach the cloud copy. Agree a cut-over time with your team, stop entries on the old machine from that point, and take the final backup then.

How long it takes

It depends mainly on how much data you have, how many companies and customisations there are, and when your team can pause entries for the cut-over. We agree the timing with you during the demo rather than quote a number that may not fit your situation.

After the move

  • Automated daily backups start on the server; set up your own scheduled copy as well, from the backup control panel.
  • Printers at each location are mapped into the session once, during onboarding.
  • Each person gets their own login with a one-time password at every sign-in.

How the service works day to day is covered in how Tally on Cloud works, and the backup arrangement on the security and backups page.
